Top 10 Questions we get asked about Baby Swimming Lessons

To many new parents, taking their baby swimming for the first time can be daunting. That’s why, we encourage all parents to consider signing up for our Baby Swimming lessons rather than going at it alone.

At High Performance we have more than a decade’s experience and know how to create the right swimming environments. Our expert coaches have developed a swim programme that keeps babies and toddlers safe in the water while ensuring the class is super fun.

What does my baby learn in the Baby Swimming Classes?

During the lessons, we teach the parents or carer how to handle the baby in the water and teach your baby self-rescue skills.

Self Rescue is a child’s ability to independently roll onto their back and float and breathe, without panicking until help arrives or until they can reach a safe point. Baby Swimming is not a regular swimming lesson, however, once a child learns; to roll over onto their back, stay afloat, relax and breathe whenever air is needed, they can start the next step which is learning to swim. Early introduction to water through the Baby Swimming lessons will help your baby conquer their fear and experience the joy of water!

We have compiled a list of the top 10 questions that we are often asked by our new parents when they are thinking about starting baby swimming. Hopefully, the answers will help you prepare yourself and your little one for their swimming adventure.

1. Is it safe for babies to swim?

Baby swimming is a safe and enjoyable activity as long as parents follow proper safety advice given by the coach. All our lessons are led by a qualified swimming instructor with the baby’s parent or carer always present. With guided instructions, the safety of your little one is our priority and we will teach you the vital safety precautions needed to take your baby into the pool.

2. What are the benefits of baby swimming?

Baby swimming offers numerous benefits such as improved motor skills, coordination, and muscle strength. It can also enhance water confidence, promote bonding between parents and babies, and potentially reduce the risk of drowning through the development of life-saving skills.

3. What should my baby wear while swimming and what should I bring to the pool?

Your baby must wear a snug-fitting swim nappy to prevent accidents from leaking into the water. It’s best to purchase a reusable nappy to avoid spending money on one-time used nappies and also this is much better for the environment. In the swim bag also pack the following items.

  • Swimming Costume for the baby
  • Reusable swim nappy
  • Baby’s favourite floating toy
  • Hooded Towel
  • Wet Wipes & Cream
  • Change of clothes
  • Snacks
  • Swim cap for the parent/carer
  • Make sure to pack your swim costume and towel too!

4. How long should baby swimming sessions last?

Babies may tire quickly in the water, so it’s important to gauge their comfort level and start with a short swim session if you are planning on heading to the pool yourself. Our swimming lessons last for 30 minutes but can be cut short if the baby shows signs of tiredness, especially in very young babies.

5. Can my baby get sick from swimming?

Proper hygiene measures, such as regular nappy checks and swimming in clean pools that are not warmer than 30 degrees Celsius can help prevent waterborne illnesses. High Performance Sports Club carefully selects appropriate pool partners where hygiene and maintenance is a top priority.

6. Should my baby have any vaccinations before swimming?

Since babies will be exposed to other children, we recommend having vaccinations done before starting the baby swimming lessons. We therefore recommend that you start with your baby swimming lessons when your baby is 6 months or older. Though in some cases you can start earlier as well.

7. Do I need to be confident in the water?

No, although parents (or carers) need to be in the pool with their child, the lessons will take place in the shallow end of the pool. All our teachers are fully trained and experienced in helping parents feel confident in the water. If you would like to feel more confident in the water and eventually swim with your child we do recommend you sign up for our adult swimming lessons.

8. Can I teach my baby to swim myself?

While parents can introduce their babies to the water and enjoy time in the pool together, our baby swimming classes are designed to teach you how to properly handle your little one in the pool. Besides pool safety, our baby programme is specifically designed to teach important water safety skills to your child and our professional coach will in turn teach the parent (or carer) how to continue teaching these skills to the baby in your own time.

It is always good to practice with your child in the pool and practice the skills you and your child have learned. Make sure that you handle your child in a safe and controlled manner to ensure safety and promote learning.

9. When is my baby ready for swimming lessons?

Your baby is ready to start swimming from day one.

Baby and Parent are welcome to join our baby swimming lessons at any age, our professional instructors will teach you how to support your baby physically throughout their lesson.

By 6 months old, your baby will have good head and neck control which will be crucial for water safety movements, and at this age babies usually exhibit a curiosity and enjoyment of the water. During the lessons, we will also teach you how to handle your little one if they start to show signs of fear or distress whilst in the water and we will help teach you how to overcome this.

10. Are there any precautions I should take during baby swimming?

Always closely supervise your baby in the water and never leave them unattended. Avoid swimming when your baby is unwell or has an infection. Furthermore, ensure the pool environment is free from hazards and follow all safety guidelines provided by the swimming facility.
